N.C. Non-Profit Animal Rescue

Give a Freedom Ride

In the rescue world, a “Freedom Ride” is that magical car ride out of an animal shelter for a dog. At first they are nervous, but there is a moment when they realize they are safe …. tongue out, tail wagging, a new chapter for them.

About Us

About Our N.C. Rescue

We are proud to be the crazy dog lovers who skip out on work to transport dogs from all over the state to their excited fosters’ homes; who stay up late searching shelter pages for that next “Freedom Ride” potential; who spend countless hours making rescue a reality!

Freedom Ride Rescue brings together individuals who share a love for dogs and a dream to see a no-kill state. Our foster-based network is in the Raleigh/Clayton, NC, area. We bring in dogs of all ages, sizes and breed mixes. We help to rehabilitate these animals – providing security, love, medical, and behavioral training as needed – until they can be adopted to their “fur-ever” homes.

We are foster based: we have no facility and every one of our adoptable (and not quite ready to be adopted) animals are in homes where families are teaching trust, love, basic manners …. preparing your future dog ready to be the best addition to your family that he can be!

As fosters, we are willing to have our heart break after we love, rehabilitate and nurse an unwanted, unloved animal until they prance away with their fur-ever person – often never looking back – as they start their most life’s wonderful chapter: the one as a cherished pet.

So join our road to making freedom rides happen! We are a wonderful, tight-knit family needing volunteers, fosters, donors – basically caring people willing to help in any way they can!

🎉🐾 6 Years of Freedom Rides, Second Chances & Happy Tails 🐾🎉

Today we’re celebrating 6 incredible years of saving dogs, finding homes, and changing lives—over 3,600 dogs have found their happily-ever-after because of our amazing community. 💛

If you’ve adopted from Freedom Ride Rescue, we want to see your pups! 🐶
📸 Drop a photo in the comments of your FRR alum and be sure to include:
✨ Their FRR name
✨ Their new name

That way we can keep all the tails straight and remember every single one of these amazing dogs who’ve been part of our journey.

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you for 6 years of love, support, and freedom rides. Here’s to many more! 💕
... See MoreSee Less

On August 10, 2019, our founders, Mollie and Larry, took the very first Freedom Ride and welcomed Rider as our inaugural foster dog. That was the start of something incredible.

Since then, we’ve brought over 3,600 dogs and puppies into the safety of loving foster homes. Just this past year alone, we welcomed nearly 500 dogs and celebrated over 450 adoptions—and every single one is thanks to this amazing community.

To our fosters, volunteers, supporters, donors, and all the wonderful families who have adopted—thank you. You’ve helped us turn miles on the road into second chances, happy tails, and forever homes.

Here’s to many more years of road trips, freedom rides, saving lives, and bringing joy to families.

We’ve shared this before, but it’s always worth sharing again—especially as we celebrate 6 years of our totally foster-based rescue program.

"I could never foster. I'd want to keep them all".

Our fosters hear this pretty much every day. We're here to tell you that you CAN foster and you CAN give them to their forever homes. You're not giving them up...you're helping them get where they need to be.

Yes, you will fall in love with your foster dogs. Yes, you will be emotional when it's time to say goodbye...but it's really happy/sad, or as we call it, Happily Heartbroken. When you see the joy that happens when a family welcomes a new dog and when you see your beloved foster dog thriving with their new family, you know you have done the right thing, and you know that you can do it again!

There will always be dogs who need a safe place to go and someone to love them (and to love them enough to find them the perfect family). We will always need generous people willing to open up their homes to foster dogs. Please consider applying to become a foster for dogs in need. It's something you will never regret doing—even if it makes you an emotional mess from time to time.

Meet Mira — a big-hearted beauty who approaches life with a toy in her mouth and love in her eyes!

Mira is the ultimate Velcro dog — she just wants to be where you are, whether you're on the move or cuddled on the couch. She's loyal, loving, and always by your side. But don’t let her snuggly nature fool you — this girl’s got a goofy streak! She adores her toys (especially the ones she can stash like secret treasures) and may or may not be building a blanket fort of hidden squeakies. She also LOVES zoomies in the yard.

Mira has been through a lot and come out the other side with so much love to give. Now she’s ready for a forever home that sees her for the gem she truly is. 💎

Christopher is a happy guy who is all about fun, friendship, and lots of cuddles. He adores playing with his doggy pals, chasing toys, and curling up with his favorite humans when it’s time to wind down. He’s leash-trained, potty-trained, and even lets you know when it’s time for a bathroom break — what a polite young man! 🐾

Christopher is quite the chatterbox, so apartment life isn’t his jam. He’d do best in a home with a fenced yard to zoom around in and at least one other dog to keep him company — he thrives with a canine buddy by his side! 🐕❤️🐕

With his goofy bark, sweet soul, and snuggly personality, Christopher is ready to steal your heart and fill your home with tail wags and happy energy.

🌟 MIRA NEEDS YOU! 🌟

Meet Mira — a 2-year-old mixed breed beauty with a heart full of love and a story of strength. On Mother’s Day, this brave girl gave birth to 8 perfect puppies. Now that she’s been spayed (yay for no more babies!), it's her turn to shine. ✨

Mira is looking for her forever home, but right now she urgently needs a long-term foster in the Raleigh area. She's sweet, playful, and so deserving of a home where she can finally be the one getting all the love and care.

💛 Fosters must live within an hour of Raleigh.
💛 We’re happy to arrange a meet-and-greet before you commit.
💛 Can’t foster or adopt? A share goes a long way in helping her find her people.

Let’s make sure Mira’s next chapter is full of snuggles, belly rubs, and love. 🐾

🌞 Meet Sprout — your very own Little Miss Sunshine! 🌱💛

With her s’mores-colored coat, soulful eyes, and ears that are always this close to standing up, Sprout is pure joy in puppy form. She’s the total package: playful, snuggly, smart, and absolutely charming.

Sprout LOVES:
🎾 Playing fetch like a pro
🧸 Snuggling on the couch
🐶 Making friends (with both pups and people!)
☀️ Sunning herself on the deck
🛋️ Sleeping like an angel all day at home or at the office

She’s crate and house trained, sleeps through the night, and has even been left alone outside the crate with no issues. She's kid-tested, apartment-approved, and lakehouse-ready. Just give her a toy and a lap, and she’ll be your loyal little shadow forever.

Think you’ve got the perfect home for this sweet girl?
👉 Apply at www.freedom-ride.org and tell her foster mom why you’re the match Sprout’s been waiting for!
Meet Huckleberry Finn — the adventurous goofball who’s always down for a good time (and a good treat… or five)! Playtime? Yes. With dogs, with toys, with shadows—doesn’t matter. Huckleberry is the definition of “anytime, anywhere, let’s go!” Once he’s fully zoomed out, you’ll find him passed out in his favorite spot: your couch.

He’s a silly, sweet pup who just wants to hear he’s a good boy (bonus points if you have snacks). And don't let his growing size fool you—Huck will try to fit in your lap forever. Prepare accordingly.

Ready for a lifetime of fun, snuggles, and a four-legged best friend?

🚨🚨FOSTER NEEDED!!🚨🚨 9 month old Pug Russel Terrier (we made that up-but think it’s accurate 🙃) is in need of a foster. She’s 17lbs, vaccinated, crate and potty trained. While this cutie is dog friendly, she’s a little too dog friendly for the senior pup in her current home. If you can foster this scruffy gal please email jennifer@freedom-ride.org today!

Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”
