Some dogs come to us so fragile, so medically complex, that simply surviving feels like a miracle. Vortex was one of those pups. She arrived at just a few days old, facing more challenges than most dogs see in a lifetime:

When Bianca came to Freedom Ride Rescue, she was one of the most shut down dogs we had ever met. She avoided touch, spent her days hiding, and carried the weight of a life where love had never been offered to her. Her fear was heartbreaking—and overwhelming. But then something incredible happened.

Bianca found comfort not in humans at first, but in the other dogs in her foster home. They became her guides, her teachers, her safety net. Some rescue stories begin with heartbreak—but end in pure joy. When we first saw photos of two tiny, pitiful puppies in a shelter, we knew instantly that we had to help. These little girls had endured far more than any puppy ever should.

When Grinny and Marlowe came into our care, they were severely malnourished, painfully underweight, and suffering from skin infections that left them missing patches of fur. Even worse, the emotional toll of their early trauma left them timid, shut down, and unsure of the world around them.

When we agreed to take in Rosalina, we believed we were saying yes to a hospice case—a gentle soul who deserved comfort, warmth, and dignity for whatever time she had left. She arrived with a massive abdominal mass, one that required extensive surgery to remove. (We apologize for the graphic photos, but we believe it’s important to show what she has overcome.)

But then something extraordinary happened.

The mass was benign, and as Rosie began to heal, her strength and spirit absolutely stunned us. Today, Rosalina has made a full recovery, and unless you saw the before photos, you’d never believe how sick she was just a short time ago. In 2025, Dwight Schrute earned the honor of being our biggest medical investment of the year. Every single dollar has been worth it for this incredibly special old man. Dwight arrived in June—underweight, struggling with food allergies, and in dire need of dental care for a mouth full of rotten teeth. When he was prepped for his dental procedure, the vets discovered something even more urgent: massive bladder stones that required immediate surgery.

After that surgery, Dwight got his dental procedure, which resulted in five extractions and repairs for an oronasal fistula. As a super senior at 15, Dwight also lives with arthritis, which we help manage daily. This past week, he began showing signs of increased pain and decreased mobility in his back and hind legs. We are working closely with our veterinary partners to find the best path forward, ensuring he remains comfortable and cared for.

Through every twist, setback, and victory, one thing has remained constant: We will continue to do everything we can for Dwight—no matter the cost. Unleash Giving for the Most Fragile Lives

Some of the dogs who come through Freedom Ride Rescue are tiny, vulnerable, and fighting battles from their very first breath. This year, we were incredibly fortunate—again—to have one of the NC’s foremost neonatal puppy specialists on our team: Julie Pellicore, FRR board member and extraordinary foster.

This year we took in 18 medically fragile puppies whose chances of survival were heartbreakingly slim. And while only half of them were strong enough to make it, every single one was loved fiercely, held gently, and given every possible chance to fight. For the ones who survived—it truly feels like witnessing miracles. Julie provides unmatched skill, compassion, and determination—giving these babies the kind of expert care that most never have access to.

Supporting puppies like these requires specialized equipment and supplies: incubators, tube-feeding tools, specialty formula, and so much more. These expenses add up quickly, but we will always say “yes” to giving fragile puppies a fighting chance.

Heartworm disease is 100% preventable, yet it continues to run rampant across North Carolina—leaving countless dogs suffering simply because they weren’t given the protection they needed. This year, Freedom Ride Rescue said yes to 9 heartworm-positive dogs (and provide heartworm prevention for each and every one of the over 400 dogs that we took in this year), each one deserving a chance to heal and feel whole again.

Treatment is intensive, slow, and expensive—around $1,000 per dog—but every penny is worth it to help these dogs breathe easier, walk without pain, rediscover play, and finally live the joyful lives they were meant to have. It’s a steep price, but one we are honored to pay. Because turning away a dog in need has never been who we are.
